About the Role

The Safety Representative position will work to ensure all employees uphold the core value of safety by implementing and maintaining J.F. Electric safety programs. A successful Safety Representative will develop positive professional relationships while working closely with field personnel, all levels of management, and outside agencies during all phases of operation. This is a field position encompassing worksites throughout the assigned area and will require travel.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works to align company safety philosophy with actual work practices
  • Completes field observations of crews to ensure compliance using an electronic check sheet
  • Upholds the core safety values of the organization
  • Trains field crews and employees on safety expectations
  • Conducts orientation activities such as completing and checking paperwork on new hires, validating required experience and licensure, and collecting I-9 documentation
    • Orientation can be in a local office or on multiple job sites
    • Often requires travel
  • Investigates incidents, injuries, damage to property or other safety-related concerns
    • Completes incident reports, OSHA required documentation, and other reports related to safety
    • Critically assesses and evaluates hazards as well as taking corrective actions in the moment
    • Documents findings
    • Communicates with HR, leadership, and field personnel what happened and recommendations for how to prevent similar occurrences
    • Verifies corrective measures have been completed (including recommendations of the safety committee, leaders, and those that arise from the suggestion programs)
  • Proactively suggests safety improvements, process improvements and personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep people safe in all facets of our work
    • Develops and maintains programs to encourage safety suggestions from others, improvements to working conditions that may impact safety, and processes that respect safety needs
  • Enforces safety standards, conducts safety audits, participates in client safety meetings or conference calls; conveys information from specific clients about their specific safety requirements on a specific job site or client's work
    • Coordinates with others to enforce work procedures, rules and regulations related to safety
    • Communicates safety and health information at employee meetings
    • Posts safety communications in various locations as needed
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with local safety agencies and insurance carriers to foster good communication between the company and external influences on safety
  • Observes workers and evaluates job activities to determine the use of prescribed safety equipment such as glasses, helmets, goggles, respirators, clothing, harnesses, and other PPE
  • Inspects new processes, materials, tools, substances, and equipment to identify hazards before an issue occurs
  • Backs up other Safety Reps and fills in for other employees who are out on vacation or leave, or in other situations where an onsite safety presence is prudent
  • Develops positive, professional relationships with field personnel, all levels of leadership, outside agencies, and the general public
  • Other duties as assigned or prudent

The person in this role will uphold the culture of JF Electric on company premises or at company-sponsored events.

Required Education, Experience & Background:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Environmental Health & Safety preferred
  • 4-5 years experience in a safety-related role
  • CUSP, CSP preferred
  • Travel will be required in this role
  • OSHA certifications required, prefer OSHA 500
  • Competent in TapRoot, RCAT, and 5-why
  • Training and presentation skills
  • Customer service experience and attitude
  • Strong influencing skills required
    • Coaching & mentoring
    • Critical thinking skills
  • Experience working with electricians or construction trades a plus
  • Ability to adhere to a schedule and reliably show up for all scheduled shifts on time
  • Strong skills with organization, communication and attention to detail
  • Computer proficiency is essential

Physical Requirements of the Role:

  • Climb ladders or scaffolding to perform inspections; occasionally work in confined spaces
  • Occasionally work in an aerial lift
  • May inspect trenches and excavations; climb steel towers and other structures
  • Stand for prolonged periods, stoop, climb, squat or walk
  • Wear a respirator and personal protective equipment appropriate to the assigned work
  • Work is often outdoors with exposure to weather including high and low temperature extremes
  • Exposure to hazards of energized power lines and associated equipment
